Haitian band Zafem, led by guitarist and producer Dener Ceide and singer Reginald Cangé, has been hit with a major legal blow in the United States. A New York district court has ruled that the rights to the name “Zafem” belong to Haitian entrepreneurs Wiss and Marie Joseph, founders of “Zafem World Entertainment.”
The pair, who trademarked the name in 2021, filed a lawsuit on September 18, 2024, accusing Ceide’s group “Zafem Music” of using the brand without authorization. Court records show that Ceide failed to respond or appear in court, leading the judge to issue a default judgment against him.
The ruling orders Dener Ceide to pay $1 million in damages and to cease all commercial use of the name “Zafem.” Since the verdict, the group’s official YouTube channel has been restricted in the U.S. — As of October 25, 2025, Zafem has not issued an official statement.
