The inauguration of a statue representing Jean Herard Richard, alias Ritchie, maestro of the group Klass, at Place Vincent in Carenage, has sparked a heated debate in Cap-Haitien. While this tribute, organized by his fans and supported by the the Cap-Haitien municipal government, celebrates a musical icon, it clashes with constitutional prohibition of the cult of personality, highlighting the tension between cultural recognition and adherence of the law.
Initiated by fans of the group Klass, in collaboration with the Cap-Haitien Municipality, a statue of Jean Herard Richard, was unveiled on Saturday, December 29, 2024 at Place Vincent in Carenage. This homage to the maestro has ignited controversy due to its apparent violation of Haitian Constitutional principles, particularly the prohibition of the cult of personality.
