Pras Michel starts 14 year federal prison sentence, vows to keep fighting guilty verdict

Pras Michel, founding member of the Fugees, has turned himself in to begin serving a 14-year federal prison sentence after his 2023 conviction on multiple criminal charges.

Michel reported to the Federal Correctional Institution in Safford, Arizona, on April 30 after receiving short delays from the court earlier this year. He was convicted on charges tied to money laundering, illegal lobbying, campaign finance violations, and acting as an unregistered foreign agent.

Federal prosecutors said Michel helped move foreign money into U.S. politics and took part in influence campaigns tied to both the Obama and Trump administrations. Prosecutors said he illegally funneled money into Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign and later joined lobbying efforts connected to Donald Trump. The case also tied Michel to Malaysian financier Jho Taek Low, who is accused of leading a multibillion-dollar fraud scheme.

Michel has denied wrongdoing and is appealing the conviction. His spokesperson said he is complying with the sentence while his legal team continues to challenge the case, especially the charges tied to foreign agent laws.

Before reporting to prison, Michel stayed largely out of the spotlight and spent time with family. He was recently seen at a Los Angeles concert hosted by Kanye West.

Michel became internationally known in the 1990s as a member of the Fugees alongside Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean. The group became one of hip-hop’s most influential acts, known for mixing rap with soul and Caribbean sounds.

His legal team says the case is far from over and plans to keep fighting the conviction through the appeals process. For now, Michel will serve his sentence while that legal battle continues.
